How WeChat Pay works for foreigners
To use the wallet, you need to verify it. According to the WeChat help center, foreigners verify their identity with a passport, and the phone number doesn't have to be Chinese.
You can link an international card to WeChat Pay, with limitations:
- the card works only for purchases in mainland China; transfers to other people and red packets aren't available;
- the help center lists limits of 6,500 yuan per transaction, 50,000 yuan a month and 65,000 yuan a year;
- payments up to 200 yuan are free; above that, the fee is 3%.
After passport verification the limits are higher. The People's Bank of China raised them on 1 March 2024, and according to Tencent, a foreigner can pay up to $5,000 per transaction and up to $50,000 a year.
On 27 May 2026, Tencent announced that first-time card linkers get the 3% fee waived for 90 days on spending up to 1,000 yuan a day. The service itself is huge: as of 30 June 2026, Weixin and WeChat had 1,439 million monthly active users, up 2% year on year.
So a linked card doesn't top up the wallet for transfers. To get yuan into WeChat, Russians need other routes: a bank transfer or an exchanger.
Transfers from Russian banks: VTB, T-Bank, MTS
MTS. On 7 May 2026, MTS launched transfers to WeChat Pay wallets in the "My MTS" app. There's no fee, the amount is ₽1,100–400,000, and money arrives within minutes. Any Russian number and a card from any Russian bank will do, Frank Media reports.
T-Bank. Since 12 November 2025, the bank has been sending money to Alipay and WeChat Pay: ₽300 to ₽1M, credited within 24 hours. But the service is for owners of Chinese phone numbers.
VTB. The bank sends money by phone number to popular Chinese mobile wallets, credited within one day, with fees from 0%. WeChat isn't named explicitly, so check the list in the app. A transfer to a Chinese card costs 1% (minimum ₽50, up to ₽350,000).

Via an exchanger: rubles or USDT → WeChat CNY
If a bank transfer doesn't fit, for example because you need a larger amount or don't have a Chinese number, you can top up WeChat through an exchanger. You pay the order in rubles from your own card or send USDT TRC20, and the exchanger credits yuan to your WeChat.
